The Maritime Lira has carried 22 million metric tonnes of oil and chemical cargoes on over 600 voyages around the world in her 25 years with Aurora Tankers. We bid a fond farewell to her last month, sending her on a final journey for green ship recycling in India, in accordance with the Hong Kong International Convention, with the International Ready for Recycling Certificate (IRRC).

The decision to opt for green ship recycling reinforces our commitment to environmental leadership and aligns with the broader global shift towards sustainability. Green ship recycling offers numerous benefits for the environment — pollution reduction, resource conservation, waste minimisation, energy savings, and marine ecosystem protection.

By employing green ship recycling, we have:

  • Prevented the release of hazardous materials into the environment.
  • Reduced demand for new resources by recycling valuable materials such as steel.
  • Contributed to energy savings and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by reusing materials and components.
  • Ensured that waste is minimised and does not end up in landfills and the ocean.
  • Protected marine life by the proper disposal of contaminants.

The Maritime Lira’s operator of 25 years, Captain Erol D’Monty, shared a sentimental tribute: “The Maritime Lira, as she headed on her final passage, was a very emotional moment for me, as I took delivery of her on a beautiful morning on the 8th of May 1998 in Dalian China. I operated her till the end, and along the way she taught some valuable lessons, tested us to the limit, and made us think on her feet.

Like me, she took thousands of sailors through typhoons, cyclones, and storms, delivering her cargo safely and ensuring all those who sailed on her went home to their families safe, sound, and well-rewarded.

The Selendang Gemala, as she was christened and the Maritime Lira when she was beached, has a very special place in my heart, as well as in that of all those who sailed on her. Her work is not done yet, as she will be broken down, her parts will be used by hundreds of ships and continue to give life to other vessels around the world. Long live Maritime Lira.”

Green ship recycling plays a crucial role in mitigating environmental impact, preserving natural resources, and safeguarding the health of our planet’s ecosystems for present and future generations.

Bon Voyage, Maritime Lira! Your legacy continues!
