PT Pelita Global Logistik (PGL) is taking proactive steps to implement Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS) ahead of an upcoming regulation by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Close to 50,000 ships are estimated to come under the purview of the new requirement to conform with IMO D-2 biological standards, which will come into force from 8 September 2024.

Ballast water plays a crucial role in maritime operations as it is often used to stabilise vessels during voyages. However, it also acts as a carrier of microorganisms, transporting them across seas and discharging them into foreign waters. The collective push to install ballast water treatment systems seeks to prevent these microorganisms from becoming invasive species and impacting fragile ocean ecosystems.

PGL will install its first BWMS on its Dewi Shinta Manggala vessel in Q4 2023, ensuring that it complies with international regulations well ahead of time. This also positions PGL as a market leader and role model in adopting environmentally sustainable solutions that contribute to the preservation of marine life.

PGL looks forward to supporting and spearheading more of such initiatives focused on advancing sustainability in maritime logistics for the energy and resources sector, paving the path towards a greener future.
